Abstract:
The article is dedicated to reviewing the main types of hubs presented in literature sources (educational, creative, civil society, technological, and others), as well as defining – based on the analysis of this review – the general characteristic features of their structure, functioning, development, and purpose. These features include close interaction between science, education, and entrepreneurship; the presence of both physical (material) and intellectual components; a high concentration and variety of necessary resources; development in the format of networks, clusters, and ecosystems; a wide range of scales (from individual spaces to clusters and ecosystems); an innovation-focused approach as a key property of hubs, as well as other characteristic traits. Looking at these features helps to better understand the essence of hubs, their capabilities, their importance in socioeconomic processes happening at different levels, as well as promising directions for theoretical research and practical development. Considering the innovative nature of all the types of hubs discussed in this work, their widespread presence across almost all major areas of human activity, and the key role of innovation in the evolution of the modern economy, hubs can be seen as one of the most sophisticated and versatile tools for driving innovation in the global economic system. This is the global role of hubs at both the macro and even meta-economic levels. At the same time, hubs can also be very beneficial at the micro level, helping to stabilize and develop socioeconomic processes within local communities. For example, organizing hubs can help address a very relevant challenge for today’s territorial communities – slowing down population outflow and improving human capital overall. Further development of research in the field of hubs could be related to setting tasks for their construction and scaling, as well as developing methods for effectively solving these tasks.
