Language: Ukrainian Year of publication: 2025 Number of pages: 178 Abstract: Ukraine’s ferrous metallurgy used to be one of the leaders in the global steel production ranking. This was due to the availability of developed domestic iron ore and coking coal mining, as well as a powerful mining and metallurgical complex, which included over 100 ferrous metallurgy enterprises. Currently, Ukraine’s mining and metallurgical complex has lost its leading positions, which is explained by the destruction and occupation of a number of steel plants as a result of Russian military aggression. Even after losing a significant part of its capacity, Ukraine’s mining and metallurgical complex remains export-oriented. In EU markets, this orientation comes with requirements for environmentally friendly production. Low greenhouse gas emissions are a competitive advantage, but achieving this edge requires technological modernization of production. The existing technology involves using a blast furnace process, which does not allow producing metal products with a low carbon footprint. This situation, along with the fact that a significant part of the main assets of metallurgical enterprises has reached the end of its service life, makes it urgent to find new directions for the development of the country’s ferrous metallurgy. The monograph presents the results of a study funded by the State budget, aimed at supporting national scientific institutions in conducting scientific research and scientific-technical (experimental) developments based on the results of State certification. To identify prospective directions for the modernization of metallurgy, global trends in ferrous metallurgy and the existing limitations on the further operation of technologies with a significant environmental impact were studied. Technological transformation directions have been proposed in the processing of key raw materials – coking coal and iron ore – that comply with greenhouse gas emission restrictions. The monograph can be useful for researchers working on the development of Ukraine’s metallurgical industry, politicians and government officials involved in postwar development and economic modernization, as well as practitioners interested in these issues.
